Isle of Man
Monday 16th August 2010
Enjoying a resurgence of interest, The Isle of Man is around 33 miles
long by 13 miles wide so is easy to explore, has gorgeous scenery
and is well stocked with attractions. This uncrowded island has a rich
folklore and unique culture developed over hundreds of years. Based in
the islands capital, Douglas, it’s a short journey north to Laxey and the
immaculate waterwheel the Lady Isabella. From here the Snafell
Mountain Railway climbs up the islands tallest peak to views of the
seven kingdoms: Mann, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the sea and
heaven! A journey west leads us to Tynwald, site of the Isle of Man’s
official legislature and the oldest parliament in the world in
continuous existence. On the coast, the picture postcard town of Peel
has an award winning museum, haunted castle, sandy beaches and
home grown smoked kippers. Tour the South West to discover
Castletown, with its medieval and maritime heritage, and the seaside
resort of Port Erin. Close by is Cregneash Village, a clutch of tiny
whitewashed cottages and the proud setting of the film ‘Waking Ned’.
At the ‘Calf of Man’ enjoy unspoilt costal views accompanied by sea
birds and seals. Oh, and don’t forget to say hello to the little people on
Fairy Bridge!
