  • Kings Road,Saatchi Gallery & Physic Garden

Chelsea might be best known these days for its extravagantly-financed football club, but in this extended day visit we check-out its alternative attractions!

Setting out from Kent late morning, we make first for Sloane Square where we set down near the Saatchi Gallery. For many of us contemporary art may not be a first-choice attraction, but the Saatchi is renowned for its varied, imaginative and inventive exhibitions – a check of the fine Trip Advisor reports testify to its appeal - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g186338-d601169-Reviews-Saatchi_Gallery-London_England.html

The Gallery is free to enter and we can come and go as we please, and with Sloane Square and the Kings Road just a few minutes stroll away there should be plenty of time to explore the shops and find a spot for lunch.

At 4pm we reassemble for the short hop across to Chelsea Embankment where we enjoy the rest of the afternoon and into the evening in another of the borough’s fine attractions – the Chelsea Physic Garden. This walled Garden was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful  Society of Apothecaries for its apprentices to study the medicinal qualities of plants and it became one of the most important centres of botany and plant exchange in the world. Today, as an independent charity the Garden relies on the support of visitors and Friends to help protect and nurture the Garden for future generations.

In July and August midweek the garden extends its opening hours into the evening so we can enjoy a relaxed visit which can include supper in the garden’s intriguingly-named Tangerine Dream café.

The Garden’s warm microclimate means that many tender plants can flourish including a number of rare and endangered species. It has the largest outdoor fruiting olive tree in Britain and the world’s most northerly outdoor grapefruit tree. From pomegranates to gingkos, mulberries to eucalyptus, there are over 100 different types of tree in the Garden, many of which are rare in Britain.  The glasshouses hold a collection of tropical and sub-tropical species, complemented by a Victorian Cool Fernery.

We time our homebound departure for 8.30pm so rush-hour traffic will have long since subsided for an easy journey home.
